Documents involving a child almost always have to be signed in front of a notary, and they almost always have a deadline attached — a passport appointment, the first day of school, a flight. Passport consent for a child under 16 (Form DS-3053), minor travel consent letters, the Texas immunization exemption affidavit, and the Texas caregiver authorization agreement under Family Code Chapter 34. Watch the clock — two of these expire

A notarized DS-3053 passport consent expires 90 days after the date of notarization. The Texas immunization exemption affidavit must reach the school within 90 days of notarization and is then valid for two years. Notarizing too early is a real and common mistake: the document is refused and the family starts over. If you are not sure of your timeline, call before you sign.

When one parent is out of state

Passport consents and travel letters frequently involve a parent who is not in Texas. We are commissioned in Texas as an online notary, so in many cases that parent can sign remotely by video instead of flying in — if the office receiving the document accepts a remotely notarized signature. Confirm that with them first.

Frequently asked questions

Does my child need to be present?

For most of these documents the notary is verifying a parent's or caregiver's signature, not the child's, so the child usually does not need to be there. The signer does. If a form calls for the minor to sign, the minor must be present with acceptable identification.

Can I sign the form before you arrive?

No. The signature has to be made in the notary's presence, so bring the form completed but unsigned. A form that was already signed in advance has to be re-signed in front of the notary, or a fresh copy used. Each signer also needs valid government-issued photo ID at the appointment.

Do you provide the forms?

No. Each of these comes from the agency that issues it — the U.S. Department of State for DS-3053, Texas DSHS for the immunization exemption affidavit. We notarize the signature on the form you bring.

Do you come to us?

Yes. We are a mobile notary and travel throughout San Antonio and Bexar County, including homes, offices, schools, hospitals and care facilities, 24 hours a day.
